Angela, a popular and thoughtful
young woman, returns for her junior year of high school after spending
the summer apart from her longtime boyfriend Travis. They have reunited
and now find themselves considering losing their virginity together,
but are unsure if they are fully aware of the responsibilities this
entails. This emotionally fraught decision is further complicated when
the school announces its plans to implement a federally funded "abstinence-only" sex-education program. The program's dramatic "scared
chaste" tactics make a big impact on the class, as does a "virginity
pledge" which many students feel pressured to sign. Angela, however,
feels she is not getting all the facts. She decides to do some of her
own sexual health research, while Travis and her friends swiftly sign
their pledges.
As abstinence-only fever spreads through school dances and colorful
assemblies, Angela discovers that many of the facts they are being
taught in class are exaggerated or incorrect and that the pledge is
commonly ineffectual when taken in large numbers. Her skepticism causes
Travis to suspect that Angela is hiding something from him, perhaps a
relationship from the summer they spent apart. When a "purity
scholarship" is announced to encourage pledge support, Angela declines
to participate, even though her class needs a hundred percent
membership to collect money. Her decision upsets Angela?s teachers,
friends and classmates, and Travis takes Angela's stance as proof of
her infidelity and breaks up with her.
Meanwhile, lack of proper instruction has left a few misinformed
students up to their own devices, which results in a small STD breakout
in the high school. This development motivates Angela to declare the
abstinence-only program as flawed at a school assembly. In an
impassioned speech, she expresses her feelings that sex is too
complicated a decision to be made based on peer-pressure, and that
students need proper information to help make responsible decisions and
take precautions. The school decides to implement a choice of sex-ed
curriculums. Travis realizes he's been unfair to Angela and applauds
her for her courage. They get back together - but wait to have sex.
