EMILY LILLY is the dutiful wife of
THEODORE "TED" LILLY, an East Pennsylvania preacher to a close-knit
small town congregation and a modest radio audience. Although outwardly
demure, Emily is the quiet driving force behind her husband's growing
influence both at home and the wider broadcast community. Emily's
dedication to the man whose faith saved her from a life of regret is
unyielding, but as their joint quest to bring their message to millions
through a pending national television deal is about to happen, she
realizes her husband no longer treats her the way he used to.
During a church social event Ted introduces LUKE, a young man in
need of work and a place to stay. Unwilling to contradict her husband's
generosity in front of the parishioners, Emily acquiesces, but when she
raises her concerns about a stranger in the house privately with Ted
she is rebuffed - something her husband would never ordinarily do.
Over the next few weeks Emily's dismay over Ted's increasing
estrangement is compounded by her growing attraction for the handsome,
charismatic drifter. As the passion between Emily and Luke grows, a
moment's weakness on her part threatens to destroy her twenty-year
marriage and all she's worked for. Devastated by her indiscretion,
Emily tries to end the affair, but Luke reveals a dark secret that
threatens to destroy much more.
Emily is forced to confront the horrible secret that she's hidden
for years and free herself from the guilt and deception that offered
her solace.
Her emotional journey from repression to personal liberation is both profound and inspiring.
